In-Character

CHARACTER NAME: Lio Fotia
CHARACTER CANON: Promare

AGE: Post undergrad aged. I typically go with 22 if an exact number is needed.
SEX/GENDER: Cis Male

Suitability:
Lio is a young adult who's had to take on enormous responsibilities early in life, often shouldering the burden alone. He'll take to the challenges presented in the game just as seriously. If there is a problem to solve, he'll be one of the first to volunteer, if there's people that need help, he'll offer his hand. Just because he'd ultimately strive towards finding a way home, he would never do so at the expense of others. He has very recently learned the importance of the bonds he has with others as well. As an overseer, he'll have the perfect opportunity to put what he's learned into practice.

Character Summary: To understand Lio, it helps to know that he wears many mantles. In a world that has oppressed and vilified people known as the Burnish -- Humans with the power to create and manipulate fire -- he recruits himself as a leader of the cause to try and free these people. He dreams of establishing a society where Burnish live apart from the hatred of humanity. As a result, he is branded as a terrorist, never once shying away from the moniker. If it causes fear and helps people to get out of his way, so much the better. Despite this, he himself remains a victim of the systems in place and by all the pressures he places on himself to succeed. The stakes couldn't be higher. A lesser person would have cracked sooner, and when he finally does thinking he lost everything in his life that was important to him, he explodes. But he is also a survivor, hot-headed and stubborn through and through. It's only through the help of others that he really come around, learns what it means to share his burdens and ultimately finds a solution that saves the world and all the people in it.

Class & Powers

Class Choice: Dragon

Class Description:
Fire Dragon. Absolutely no one could have predicted this.
Lio is capable of experiencing a range of changes progressing from his human to his Berserker Dragon form.
- At it's simplest, he will exhibit the suggestion of dragon features like three horns, and a tail formed out of a vaporous smoke. He may breathe smoke involuntarily. Features example Horns example
- In the next stage the features solidify into solid appendages. He grows talons and his skin and hair turn an iridescent black from the scales that cover him, either partially or fully, depending on the degree of transformation. This form is inspired by his "awakened" form in the movie. Awakening Screencap Partial Transformation Example
- The last two stages are full dragon. In berserker mode, Lio will basically embody the fire dragon (aka spicy noodle) he transformed into during the movie, body fully covered in flames. Outside of berserker mode he will exhibit the same asian style, serpentine form but his body will be all black. Spicy Noodle References
- As he moves from human to full dragon, his body temperature rises with each change. Where transformation is possible, strong emotions can bring on the change, amplified by the influence of his powers.
- Black Crown. Pointy. Looks like the same material his Burnish armor is made of. Crown Ref 1 Crown Ref 2
- Sources will be provided for all references on his info pages. I just didn't include them here for legibility

Canon Powers: At his core, Lio is a master at manipulating fire with impressive range and creativity. The power is the product of his symbiosis with the Promare, an alien life form and source of energy (similar to the Jedi in Star Wars with midichlorians. Or The Vampire Chronicles, where vampires serve as a kind of host for an ancient spirit). For Lio, these powers aren't just passive abilities; they form the foundation of his identity. They manifest as an inner pyromaniac voice that speaks to him and demands that he let them out, like releasing the pressure on a cooker to stop it from exploding. Cut off from his home world, Lio will be significantly more dependent on himself. In the world of Promare, Burnish can draw power from other Burnish and even the world itself as an external fuel source. Therefore, Lio simply wouldn't have access to that excess of power here.

Breaking it down, his fire abilities include:
  • General fire manipulation, including summoning, bending, and extinguishing
  • Regeneration. This ability feeds on the user's life force for power but simultaneously has a regenerative effect on them in the process. Basically, he can use it to heal faster than the average human. He could heal other Burnish by sharing his fire, but that aspect would have very limited use here, likely restricted to others with an affinity for fire only. To a certain extent, this makes the power self-sustaining, but it can be overused -- resulting in the user's death.
  • Forging fire into various objects like weapons, armor, a motorcycle, a throne, and probably lots of random things. It's unclear if these objects are permanent from what we see in canon, but for the sake of not being OP, I'm going to say these objects "extinguish" over time like any other fire. It's also best for familiar objects where the details aren't important. For example, he wouldn't be able to generate a key to a locked door because he has no way of knowing what that key should look like to work properly. They are also still literally fire, so that puts an additional limit on their situational usefulness.
  • He like crashed out and mega evolved into a dragon one time. Now he can turn into that dragon without the crash out!

SAMPLE SECTION

Roleplay Sample One: Glass Coffins
Sample One Summary: This thread provides a good baseline to show where Lio starts from. He's someone who can keep a cool head in the face of adversity -- most of the time. He's got some skill with manipulating situations to his advantage regardless of how much or how little he's given, and he doesn't do so at the expense of others, even annoying ones. He's someone who prefers to work together and strive towards a common goal that benefits everyone. It also demonstrates how he can be distant but not unfriendly, a trait he had to develop as a leader of thousands.

Roleplay Sample Two: Grief Hath Mates
Sample Two Summary: First of all, Lio is someone who tries to be helpful and considerate of others. He also tries to solve problems whenever they arise, both of which this thread demonstrates. This is someone who staged a prison break by getting his whole team captured all for the sake freeing other people. While it's a ballsy move, it's also one that would have required precise planning and confidence in his abilities. He is smart and a calculating, possessing a wealth of experience that he's ready to put to use as a means to an end. It will easily be one of the best ways to get him to engage with the setting.

Roleplay Sample Three: Random Scenario on BS
Sample Three Summary: Full disclosure this is from a canon adjacent AU, however the Lio being played in it is identical to canon with no changes. If anything about this sample is not appropriate, please feel free to disregard it. That's why I put it in the optional slot. It's difficult to show Lio's full range in a TDM, especially when his development through the movie opens him up and brushes off some of the more abrasive layers to him. But those sides of him are still there. I don't expect anyone to read this full thread. But the first approximately 33 comments show how he would regard an enemy (acerbic but still treating them as well as his morals demand), how he might deal with being proven wrong about some of his assumptions (he's someone who is used to having assumptions made about him, and the last thing he'd want to appear a hypocrite), and it continues to demonstrate how he's willing manipulate the situation to make the most of his limited resources, even where an adversary is involved (he doesn't trust this person, but he can still try to gain a useful ally and all the helpful information that might provide all for the good of the cause he cares so much about). Furthermore, he's taking the whole burden and responsibility for this person entirely on himself, a very fatalistic trait that tends to get him in trouble.
The last dozen or so comments on the thread are NSFW (and really not relevant to why I'm using this as a sample so just warning to avoid surprises for anyone)

SURVEY SECTION

Do you value emotional bonds with other people?
[ He's always cared a great deal about other people. If he were strong enough, he could share in their burdens, ease some of their pain. Sometimes subvert it entirely. But every problem that fell on his shoulders weighed down on him till he bent like a modern day Atlas. Just one more thing goes wrong, and the world might flatten him.

It almost had. ]

I'm learning to. [ He can actually admit to that weakness in hindsight. ] When I look back at all the times I've succeeded, I now see all the people that helped me on that journey. Whereas before I saw them as something I needed to protect, the truth is we were protecting one another.

[ There were his generals who sacrificed themselves to save him from capture and Galo who had come to his rescue despite only knowing him for a matter of days. Even Burning Rescue didn't stop to question whether supporting him, a Burnish, was the right thing to do. And he'll never forget the countless other Burnish who lived in the settlement, uplifting him every day with their small, random acts of kindness. ]

I couldn't have gotten here on my own.

Have you ever met someone who changed the course of your life?
[ Three words ring in his head loud and clear. Stay with me. ]

Galo Thymos. I owe my life to him. And it's not just me. Billions of people would have died if it weren't for his stupid, stubborn, steadfast way of confronting any problem head-on.

[ There's much more to say but how does he even begin to put it into words when he's still sorting through his feelings for Galo, trying to turn them into something comprehensible. For all Lio's burning light, Galo is like the sun that shines on him, one who has made all the life in the world possible. He'll never be able to repay him, but he'll still spend the rest of his life trying.

All so he can stay by his side. ]

He's a true hero.

If you could speak to your younger self, what would you tell them?
Becoming a Burnish is often like going through the stages of grief. You know the ones. Denial that this could be happening to you, Anger, often at other Burnish as reflection of what they hate about themselves, Bargaining for a return to their old way of life and why couldn't it just happen to someone else. They won't be like the others. Depression because they know life is about to treat them the very same way they once treated us. Not everyone makes it to acceptance.

[ He's coached people through enough awakenings to recognize the signs and help them through it, as best he can. ]

It's harder when you're a child. More confusing. It seems more unfair.

So what I'd want my younger self to know is they don't need to be afraid. The things they've lost are so much less than what they will gain. If they just accept it, they'll grow stronger. And more confident.

[ And maybe that will be enough to keep them from suffering the same ways he has. ]

Is it better to be loved or feared?
[ He's known people throughout his life who would answer both ways. He's witnessed first hand oppressive burden imposed by men who rule by fear. It comes from so many sources. Their own fears. Avarice. Narcissism. All ugly traits he would never want to be associated with.

People like that are only interested in serving themselves.

He doesn't strive to be loved, only it seems like the natural outcomes from helping others. Not in any kind of self serving way but the honest, selfless service that strives for a common good. That doesn't make him a foolhardy idealist. In war, you will always be the feared enemy to some. And he had worn that mantle to further their cause. But he didn't have to like it. ]

Loved. Men who rule by fear will never hold real power.

What do people tend to like about you?
[ The question summons fond memories of the settlement. Full of countless people who had trusted him enough to follow him. And his grand dream of freedom.

The hardest part of leading Mad Burnish hadn't been the battles with Freeze Force or the ceaseless missions to free their Burnish brethren. It hadn't been the scarcity that forced them to live with their fears and hunger like an omnipresent specter, laudable in their lack of complaint.

No. It had been the constant consideration for those people surrounding him among the cramped floors of their derelict hideout, looking to him like a beacon. Lio lived among them as the same kind of pauper and for them, his door was always open. For the mother who dropped by his room every other day for updates on the whereabouts of her son and every day he would hear her out. The elderly couple who offered kind smiles and a particular talent for turning out gourmet meals from the meager canned rations they subsisted on. Who always saved him the last serving and chided him for not eating enough when he does so much to keep them housed and fed. He needed to keep his strength up.

Most of all, he remembers the children flooding in and out of his room with all their youthful questions, just trying to divine the secrets of the universe. Sometimes, when he slept -- at intermittent, seemingly random hours of the day -- he woke to find half a dozen of them, curled up around him in any spare space they could find. One by one, he carried them back to their parents, time and again without a word. All until one day, a young father thought to remark something curious to him.

Lio never moved the children after that. ]

I'm told they feel safe with me.

When did you last cry? Why?
The Burnish were captured by Kray Foresight.

[ His words don't even get at the half of it. Not a quarter. Not a minuscule fraction of it. The man who had coveted all Burnish power for himself for decades risked nearly ending them. Their lives, their hopes, their dreams. Lio had never fallen farther than he did in that moment, standing on the precipice of death, staring into an abyss of a shattered promise for the future.

The tears had flowed like hot magma pouring forth from a volcano, incinerating everything in its path. Distantly, watching from on high, his spirit having flown from his body, he knew Mt. Fennel had erupted. Drawing on the power that flowed directly from the Earth's core, he had transformed into a monster that knew only pain, and desperation, and despair, and loneliness. A keen misery that cried for the souls of every life that risked being lost, snuffed out and forgotten like they never once mattered.

The Burnish had never mattered to society at large except in how they served as a target for hate. Lio had swallowed all of that hate, the dark cold malice. And threw it back a hundredfold.

Even now, the memory stings from the ragged, raw emotions so that the events all blur together into one charred, black spot. ]

I barely remember it.
